The University library shelve its non-fiction or subject books according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system. The number on the spine / back of a book is its "Dewey number". We add the first three letters of the author's surname and or book's title (if there is no author), to help distinguish between items with the same number.
What is call number?
It is an alphanumeric code that uniquely identifies and indicates the location (address) of an item in a library's collection. "Call numbers" are marked usually on the spine of the item and correspond with the numbers in the catalog of the library's collection. In the example below, “305.420954 SIN” is the call number.
