UL Library Systems, Applications and Online Services: Library eBooks

A guide on how to access and utilise UL Library Systems, Applications and electronic resources

About eBooks

These are electronic books available in full text online. Some older eBooks that are no longer subject to copyright are made freely accessible online.

Recently published eBooks  however are subjected to Digital Rights Management (DRM), which is copyright protection for electronic resources. This copyright limits the duration of the loan of a downloaded/loaned out eBook title, and the allowed amount of copying, saving, emailing and printing.

Due to DRM, eBook downloading, copying, saving, emailing and printing options and restrictions will vary with each service provider / publisher / platform and their offered licence types.

EBook Formats:

EBook files are either in PDF or ePub format. ePub format is the universally adopted format based on its ability to adapt and fit eBook contents to the dimensions of various Mobile device screens screen.

PDF versions can be viewed within the service provider interface/website without downloading them.

Permissions & conditions of usage:

EBooks are made available on a license basis, that determine how, where, and when they may be used. Conditions of eBooks usage vary by platform and service provider. This includes:

  • The total number of concurrent users allowed to access one title at a given time. Some eBook are purchased as 1-user-at-a-time.  If someone is currently viewing that eBook within their browser or has downloaded it, you will be denied access until that client is done viewing or or returning the book.

You can download/checkout titles that the library has purchased multiple copies or licenses of. When downloading an eBook title and you get an error message below it means that the library has one copy or one user license for that title. That specific title will not allow downloading or checkout for offline viewing, but can only be viewed online to ensure that everyone has access to it at all times.
