How do I borrow Library materials

  • Books can be borrowed from all libraries, the main library at Turfloop and the Hospital libraries in Mankweng and Polokwane respectively.
  • You must present your valid university card for all borrowing transactions. Take your university card and the items you want to borrow to the Circulation Desk or the self-check machine.

Borrowing library materials from open shelves

  • Library users can use the self-check machine to borrow open-shelf materials from the Library
  • Open-shelf materials must be returned at the circulation desk of the lending library on or before the due date
  • Reserve/Short-Loan materials are borrowed from and returned to Reserve/Short-loans counter at the Library where they were borrowed

Returning books on loan

  • Items must be returned to the circulation desk where they were borrowed.
  • Library users must be present when the items are checked back on the system.
  • A print-out receipt should always be requested from the desk to keep a record.

Returning books after the due date

  • A courtesy notice reminder will be sent to the user a day before the due date to either return or renew the items in order to avoid fines.
  • This reminder is a courtesy service and the Library is not responsible for non-receipt.
  • Overdue items will accumulate fines and will result in the suspension of borrowing privileges until the items are returned and fines paid.
  • Users with outstanding fines will not be able to:
  • View examination results
  • Register for the following year
  • View or print an academic record
  • Receive a graduation certificate
  • Access some of the library services

Renewing library materials on loan

  • Borrowers who wish to extend the loan period may renew items online via the Library catalogue (WebPAC) or telephonically
  • Alternatively, an extension may be requested in person by furnishing the LIS personnel at the Circulation or Short Loan/Reserve Counter with your UL identification card and the item number(s) of the resource(s) in your possession, provided the item is not “on hold” for another user.
  • All items from the open stack collection may be renewed twice if the item has not been placed on hold for another user.  The material must have been checked-out for it to be placed on hold.
  • Items may be renewed telephonically on 0152682201/0152682333
  • Items may also be renewed online via the Library Catalogue, click on "Renew library materials” and follow the prompts or you can visit the circulation desk and provide your card. Ask staff to renew items for you
